Manuscripts and special collections

Making content for social media channels is a whole beast of it’s own. You’ve got lots to consider when shooting for vertical… or portrait some might say. Safe zones, framing, shooting in 4-6K to maximise outputs i.e. could we do landscape and portrait while thinking portrait first? It’s a minefield… luckily I’ve been creating content for social media throughout my whole professional career and I’ve seen content and platforms come and go and change and develop over the years.

This brief was a joy to take on! University of Nottingham have their own archive known as Manuscripts and Special Collections. Not only is it housed inside one of the largest studios at the former Carlton Studios in Nottingham (now Kings Meadow Campus), making it a strange and interesting location, but it’s also home to a plethora of weird and wonderful items to delight and intrigue. How better to showcase this than through TikTok and Instagram Reels? And that right there was the brief, showcase the cool stuff in a cool way with my own creative freedom to do it how I fancied.

The team of conservators who look after the items and the store were so accommodating and up for all my daft requests! I filmed with them for the best part of a day to produce six different videos which have, at the time of writing collectively racked up over 125K views on Instagram alone!

Check them out below – four are published so far with another two to come!
